Nigel Plane was born in Leicestershire and held a career in retail finance for forty years.

He draws inspiration for his writing through a passion for history, both ancient and modern, as well as walking and photographing the English landscape. After exploring the ancient wayfarer’s track, the Ridgeway, across Wiltshire and the Berkshire downs, along with Hadrian's Wall and Northumbria, he began to write ghost stories.

Echoes of prehistoric monuments, and our Romano-British past often influence his work. Among its varied landscapes – walking is good for the soul – there is a richness of ancient myth and folklore steeped in our island’s history, a perfect backdrop to fire the imagination. To that end, his favourite author is MR James, the inventor of the quintessential English ghost story.

His series of novels, placed in a contemporary setting, are best described as paranormal thrillers, and his compendium of short stories, “Haunted Realm”, are imbued with a lingering feeling of menace, a shock just around the corner, and lashings of femme fatales. Things that go bump in the night rather than gothic horror – although he’s capable of including the latter!

His latest offering, “Flight of the Doves”, a foray into science fiction/fantasy, takes these themes to a new level and is set amid the grandeur of an alien world.

A self-confessed armchair history buff, when he’s not reading about it, or adding to his coin collection (history again!), he’s talking to his good friend down at the pub about it all, putting the world to rights, or discussing the woes of their adopted football teams.

His guilty secret? A Doctor Who fan – a “Whovian”, watching it, criticising how bad it’s become, yet coming back for more.

Escapism – it’s what we all need, and, perhaps, the true motive for creating his stories.
